Why Online Schools are Easier for Adult Learners

Shannon Kietzman, Contributing Writer

Updated: 3/15/2010

When deciding to go back to college, you will be faced with many decisions. One of the decisions you will need to make is whether you will attend an online university or if you will go to a brick and mortar college. While there are pros and cons associated with both options, there are many reasons why adult learners often choose online schools when pursuing a higher education.

Reason #1: Flexibility

Perhaps the single most attractive reason to attend an online university is because of the flexibility it offers. Let’s face it; many adults heading back to college do not have the luxury of focusing solely on their studies. Rather, you may have a family to take care of and you may even need to juggle a job while going to school. The fact that you can attend class at any time that fits your schedule is a major plus for a busy adult looking to earn a degree.

Reason #2: More Options

When you are restricted to attending a brick and mortar university, you can only choose from a limited number of degree options. Attending an online university, on the other hand, allows you to select from a number of different programs. Do you want a law degree? Perhaps you are interested in getting a nursing degree or you want to pursue your master’s degree in education. If you don’t live near a law school or a university that offers nursing programs or programs in education, you are out of luck. As an adult, moving away to attend a specific college usually is not an option. With the help of programs online, however, you can bring the school to you

Reason #3: Don’t Worry About Your Age

Many adults feel concerned about being older than other students on campus. While it is true that there are a growing number of adults deciding to return to college, this is still a matter of concern for many adults. When you pursue an online degree, however, this no longer has to be a concern. After all, your classmates will never know how old you are unless you decide to tell them.

Reason #4: Share Your Wealth of Knowledge

As an adult, you have "real world" experience that many college-aged students do not have. When you attend an online university, you can enjoy the freedom to share this knowledge with a bit of anonymity. At the same time, you can connect with other adult learners from around the world, which means you can learn from the knowledge they have to share as well.

Reason #5: Keeping Costs Down

While pursuing an online degree is not always cheaper than attending a brick and mortar university, you often will find these classes to be less expensive. Why? The answer is simple – online schools do not have as much overhead as brick and mortar universities because they do not have to construct and maintain buildings or find office space for their professors. Therefore, these savings can often be passed onto the student.
